Designers Don’t Ask Enough Questions. And It Shows in Execution

Beautiful materials can fail without the right questions. Learn what designers should ask before selecting finishes like stone, tile, carpet, and fabric.

A beautiful finish is not always the right one. Selecting finishes is one of the most exciting parts of design. But it’s also where many projects quietly begin to fail. Designers often choose materials based on how they look, without fully understanding how they perform.

The issue is not a design, it’s missing questions.  Even the most beautiful materials can become a problem when:

• Stone stains or etches

• Carpet wears too quickly

• Tile cracks or becomes slippery

• Fabric doesn’t handle daily use

These are not design mistakes. They are missed questions.

What should always be asked

Before selecting any finish:

• How durable is it?

• How does it react to water, heat, and cleaning?

• Is it suitable for this exact space?

• What does installation require?

If these answers are unclear, the risk is already built into the project.

Execution reveals everything. On drawings, everything works.  On site, reality takes over, and that’s when poorly understood materials start to fail.

Design is responsibility. A finish is not just a visual choice. It’s a long-term decision. Good design is not only about how it looks, but how it performs over time.
